Alarming Melt of the Aletsch Glacier

The Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps, is experiencing significant melting in 2024. Glaciologist Matthias Huss reported on social media that at Konkordiaplatz, the thickest part of the glacier, no less than four meters of ice loss has been observed this year, despite the heavy snowfall last winter.

Huss, affiliated with Glamos, the organization that monitors glaciers in Switzerland, will publish detailed research findings on October 1. These results are expected to provide key insights into the rate and scale of glacier melt across the European Alps.

The situation at the Aletsch Glacier symbolizes a broader trend in the Alps and around the world, where the impact of climate change is becoming increasingly visible.
