Sauerland Invests €5 Million in Sustainable Winter Sports

The Sauerland winter sports regions are investing €5 million to enhance snow reliability and sustainability. New all-weather snow cannons, capable of producing snow regardless of temperature, will be installed in Winterberg, utilizing waste heat to improve energy efficiency. One system will also heat the multifunctional Schneewittchenhaus.|

The latest technology significantly boosts energy efficiency, with some systems reaching up to 160 kW of usable thermal energy. Additionally, areas like Fahlenscheid are upgrading with energy-efficient machines and GPS systems for precise snow management.

Sustainability efforts include using HVO biodiesel for snow groomers, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90%, and relying on green electricity. The region aims to be climate-neutral by 2030. With well-filled reservoirs and reforestation efforts, Sauerland is ready for a sustainable and snow-secure winter season.

The Sauerland region is home to several popular ski areas, including Winterberg, Willingen, Altastenberg, and Neuastenberg. These resorts offer a variety of slopes suitable for all skill levels, from beginner-friendly pistes to more challenging runs. Located just 90 to 120 minutes by car from Cologne.
